Coaching
Run Academy offer coaching to members who are looking to improve their running performance. All Run Academy coaches are qualified (UK Athletics Coaches in Running Fitness and Level 2 coaches), experienced runners and are supported and assisted by a number of run ‘Leaders’, who also hold formal qualifications (UK Athletics Leader in Running Fitness). All members of the coaching team are fully insured by UK Athletics and give their time for free. We do this because we love running and love helping others to run better, smarter and faster. We are happy to coach runners at all levels*, and regularly run sessions to help those new to running, or who have taken a break. We recognise and regularly see that a beginner today is the high performance runner of the future – and we have some very real and local examples of this! In return, we ask that runners signing up for coaching commit to our 3 C’s:
Whilst we do have to limit our capacity in order to keep group sizes both safe and effective (and to stay within the UKA recommended limits), we aim to never turn anyone away!
*Please note we coach over 18s only.
RAW Club Aims & Training Structure
Aims
We are a running club focused on helping members improve their running. We aim to deliver
a friendly and inclusive approach whilst providing a strong focus on helping runners improve
their fitness levels, personal bests and enjoyment.
All levels are welcome, from total beginner to international level athlete. We have a number
of International Masters champions in our ranks alongside many experienced runners and
many who are new to running. We will ensure that you run with others of a similar ability and
do whatever it takes to help you enjoy the experience.
To meet this aim, the Club has a team of licensed Coaches and Leaders who are there to
help members develop and improve.
Training Structure
To help achieve these aims the Club offers the following running groups. The Coaches and
Leaders are always happy to discuss the appropriate group for a runner and encourage a
move to another group if is this thought to be beneficial. Normally, runners will move up 1
group at a time.
The running groups described below usually meet every Tuesday and Thursday evening.
Foundation Group
This is for those who are new to running and want to get started or are coming back from
injury. The sessions are designed to gradually build stamina and strength so that over a
while members can run continuously for 3 to 4 miles (5 to 6k). Coaching support is also
available.
Progression Group
New runners would normally expect to advance to this group where the emphasis is on
building up to 10k while improving their pace at shorter distances. Typically, runners in this
group would be running 5k between 30 to 35 minutes. Coaching support is also available.
Coached Group
This group is for those runners who want to improve their running performance through
structured training sessions. There is an emphasis on developing a good running style along
with workouts that will test a runner’s capability. Typically, runners in this group will be
completing 5k in 25 to 30 minutes.
Advanced Coached Group
This group is for runners who are race focussed or have specific targets they wish to
achieve. Again, the training offered is structured to broadly meet each runners’ needs within
the group. Typically, runners in this group will be running 5k quicker than 25 minutes.
- Consistency – You will regularly attend training sessions, and work with your coach to improve your running at other times
- Commitment – You’ll try your best, and you’ll stick with it when it gets tough!
- Competitive – You are looking to improve your running performances and you’ll work with your coach to and the Run Academy team to test your performance through being part of the Run Academy team.
Whilst we do have to limit our capacity in order to keep group sizes both safe and effective (and to stay within the UKA recommended limits), we aim to never turn anyone away!
